Wer nicht die Gelegenheit hatte, Hank Williams von Anfang an zu sammeln, wer
angewiesen war auf die vielen Veröffentlichungen in den letzten 20, 30 und mehr
Jahren, auf denen es immer wieder Überschneidungen von Liedtiteln gab und auf
denen vor allem ab Mitte der 60er Jahre überspielte Versionen seiner Lieder zu
hören waren, wer sich
den kompletten Hank Williams auf einen Schlag zulegen möchte: Hier ist die
Gelegenheit. Die 10-CD-Box ist am 22. September 1998 anläßlich des 75.
Geburtstags von Hank Williams in den USA erschienen. Das Besondere dieser Box: Die ersten
10 000 Exemplare waren durchnummeriert. Die dürften inzwischen längst vergriffen,
aber....man weiß ja nie.
Die Box enthält 225 Aufnahmen, von denen bisher 53 nicht veröffentlicht waren. Sie enthält sämtliche Studio-Aufnahmen von Hank Williams bei Sterling und MGM, der Rest stammt aus den verschiedensten Radio-und Fernsehshows und von der Bühne der Grand Ole Opry. Eine Aufnahme aus seiner Show im Titania-Palast in Berlin ist ebenfalls zu hören als Erstveröffentlichung. Einige Aufnahme auf CD 5 stammen aus den Jahren 1939 bis 1942. Die Kritik schrieb: "The Complete Hank Williams boxed set garnered two Grammy Awards including Best Historical Album for producers Colin Escott, Kira Florita, and The Country Music Foundation; and Best Boxed Recording Package for Jim Kemp and Virginia Team. The complete Hank Williams boxed set, executive produced by Mercury Nashville President, Luke Lewis, was initially released to coincide with the Sept. 17, 1998, 75th anniversary of Williams' birth. Many previously unissued demos, in excellent sound quality: just Hank and his guitar. From the earliest known recording dated 1939 when Hank was just 17 years old, to his last MGM session on September 23, 1952 - three months before his death at the age of 29, all existing and available recordings are included. Digitally remastered from the most original sources for optimal sound."

** Der Titania-Palast in Berlin Steglitz wurde in den Jahren 1926 - 1927
gebaut, ein auch für Konzert- und Theateraufführungen geeignetes Kino, das
2071 Sitzplätze bot. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg war der Titania-Palast ein
Zentrum des gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Lebens in Berlin. 1966 schloß
der Titania-Palast und wurde 1969 zu einem Geschäftshaus umgebaut. Das Bild
auf dieser Seite stammt aus dem Jahr 1989. Seit Mai 1995 gibt es dann wieder

Das Internet bietet dem Betrachter sehr viel. Sehr viel auch über Hank Williams. Auf der Suche nach irgendwelchen interessanten "Neuigkeiten" (50 Jahre nach seinem Tod!) bin ich auf einen Zeitungsartikel gestoßen, der am 9. November 1949 in einer amerikanischen Tageszeitung veröffentlicht wurde und sich mit der European Tour von Hank Williams befaßt. Hierin heißt es: "Zwei Tage nach Hank Williams Montgomery-Auftritt mit der Grand Ole Opry-Truppe am 11. November 1949 wird Hank Williams nach Europa fliegen, wo er eine 20-Tage-Tournee bestreitet. Mit dabei sind Roy Acuff & his Smoky Mountain Boys, Prince Albert, Red Foley, Minnie Pearl, Little Jimmy Dickens, Judy Martin sowie Hank und Audrey Williams. Die Opry-Truppe wird in England, Frankreich und Deutschland gastieren." Auch noch 53 Jahre nach dem Ereignis, das ja immerhin durch eine Aufnahme in obiger CD-Box belegt ist, ist es für den Beobachter von größter Wichtigkeit endlich zu erfahren, daß es in der Country Music auch einen "Prince Albert" gibt, dessen Existenz bislang verborgen blieb. Prince Albert, fragte ich mich. Prince Albert? Prince Albert ...Sie wissen ja, wie man da gedanklich ins Schleudern kommt. Prince Albert. Aha. 649.000 Einträge gibt es bei Google für den Prinzen, den ich nicht kenne. Aber was soll ich Sie länger auf die Folter spannen. Den Prinzen Albert, den die Zeitung damals erwähnte, den gibt es gar nicht. Der war auch nicht auf der Deutschland-Tournee damals im November 1949. Konnte er auch nicht. Dieser Bericht bestätigt mir wieder einmal mehr, daß man als Amerikaner zwar Ahnung über die Country Music haben kann, doch nicht haben muß, daß man als deutscher Besucher der Grand Ole Opry mehr Ahnung haben kann als ein Resident von Tennessee.Und des Rätsels Lösung? Prince Albert war ein wichtiger Sponsor der Grand Ole Opry. Geworben wurde während des Prince Albert Show-Segment für den Prince Albert Smoking Tobacco der R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. So war das also mit dem Prinzen von und zu Albert!
Und auf der Homepage von WSMonline fand ich die folgende Erklärung zu Prince Albert:
Prince Albert Prince Albert was an extremely important Opry sponsor, since they sponsored the segment aired nationally on NBC (as opposed to just locally on WSM) from 1939 to 1960. During its years in existence, the "P. A. Opry," as it was often called, featured the finest country entertainment WSM could muster. The sponsorship itself was paid for by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, makers of several tobacco brands. On the Opry, they primarily advertised Prince Albert Smoking Tobacco, "The National Joy Smoke," a canned/pouch tobacco product for "roll-your-own" cigarettes and pipe use. Occasionally, other Reynolds products would be mentioned: OCB rolling papers and Cavalier Cigarettes come to mind. As was the case in the 1930s and '40s, network radio, the sponsor and its advertising agency exercised a lot of influence over the show's content. William Esty and Company, Reynold's agency, was no exception. By allowing them frequent appearances on the show, Esty and Prince Albert made artists like Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl, Rod Brasfield, and Red Foley national stars. From 1939 into the early '40s, George D. Hay hosted the show, which featured Acuff as its star. Later, Acuff himself hosted. Starting in 1946 and lasting until 1953, Foley hosted the show. From 1953 to 1960, rotating hosts were used. One of Acuff's contributions to the show was his composition of the program's theme song (". . .Roll back the rug on the floor / Light up your old cob pipe / Everyone's gonna have some fun / At the Grand Ole Opry tonight!") which was used for several years--even after he ceased hosting the show. Longtime Opry listeners will also remember the quartet groups--such as the Old Hickory Singers or the Jordanaires--that were regularly featured and who usually got to sing a jingle as part of one of the commercials. If you're a longtime Opry fan, you probably remember them singing something like the following: So fill your pipe with good P.A., And take a puff or two. You'll get that extra smoking joy Prince Albert brings to you! The announcers on the P.A. show included David Stone from 1939 to the early '40s, Louie Buck from the early '40s until 1948, and Grant Turner from 1948 to 1960.
